I will admit, I have NEVER heard anyone say that but as I stood at my booth at one of the largest wedding expos in the area, I could FEEL it. I could “hear the silent question: ‘ Where does magic fit in the wedding?’ Most people just do what everyone else is doing. I am faced with the reality that wedding magic is a new concept in the United States as opposed to the United Kingdom. LUCKILY for brides, grooms, and myself – the trend is making its way to the USA and it’s my job to break the cycle of the mundane USA wedding which goes as follows: Ceremony, Reception, First Dance, the end. Weddings in the USA historically are not as long as weddings in Europe, Mexico/Latin America which can be all-day or multi-day events.
Just as in the bagless coin purse routine I do at weddings, there is an empty space in most USA weddings. The tiny things that happen between the ceremony, reception, first dance, and conclusion. Well, there is the photography and as I discussed in a previous article, magic is photogenic.
Magic is NOT just for themed weddings
I have worked themed weddings (think Harry Potter or Gothic) & I have worked for non-themed weddings. A competent, professional wedding magician will be flexible. You should NOT rob your wedding or yourself of ever-lasting memories of fun and magic simply for keeping things traditional. Whether you choose to theme or not, there is a place for magic in your happy ever after.
Not everyone can or wants to dance
In conclusion, most people do as they see. Many don’t see the uniqueness in their weddings – they follow the same formula as every other wedding. Every wedding has this one itsy bitsy problem – accessibility. Not everyone can dance. Magic is an accessible form of entertainment. It bypasses culture and language. It can add a layer of accessibility to your wedding by entertaining guests seated at the table during the dance. No one likes being excluded or feeling excluded.
