Magic sometimes gets a bad rep as an ego-boosting self-masturbatory endeavor because a few insecure power-hungry megalomaniacs call themselves “magician” because of the historical prestige the craft has. As a business, because magic is show business & business is the longest word in the term – it is important to remember that it is a service.
Magic is a service aimed at helping clients achieve a goal
Be it on stage or strolling around at the cocktail party – I as a magician am trying to help my client reach a goal. The goal can sometimes be for the raw entertainment, it could be for advocacy (such as what I’m doing in the photo at the right), it could be to increase sales or to promote a cause or product.
Every time I am in the early stages of helping a client, my mind immediately goes to Genie from Aladdin. I want to be the best friend a client has ever had from the time they inquire with me to the time I send my thank you email a day or two after the event(s). During the planning phase, I try to work out what the client aims to achieve and how it can be achieved. Sometimes I can do it all on my own, sometimes it requires a little bit of meeting in the middle as far as effort to make it happen.
In addition – it is my duty as a magician to transmute the client’s goal to the guests/clients of my client.
I DO NOT believe magic is entertainment for entertainment’s sake. Magic is an emotionally driven form of art. I want the clients to FEEL something and walk away with something as a result. Magic is one of the greatest acts of giving as far as art is concerned.
